Proper nounSingular Pagan Plural - Pagan
AnagramsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Paganism (from Latin paganus, meaning "country dweller", "rustic") is a blanket term used to refer to various polytheistic, non Judeo-Christian religious traditions. Its exact definition may vary: It is primarily used in a historical context, referring to Greco-Roman polytheism as well as the polytheistic traditions of Europe before Christianization. In a wider sense, extended to contemporary religions, it includes most of the Eastern religions, and the indigenous traditions of the Americas, Central Asia and Africa, as well as non-Abrahamic folk religion in general. More narrow definitions will not include any of the world religions and restrict the term to local or rural currents not organized as civil religions. Characteristic of pagan traditions is the absence of proselytism and the presence of a living mythology which explains religious practice. The term "pagan" is a Christian adaptation of the "gentile" of Judaism, and as such has an inherent Abrahamic bias, and pejorative connotations among Western monotheists, comparable to heathen and infidel also known as kafir (كافر) and mushrik in Islam. For this reason, ethnologists avoid the term "paganism," with its uncertain and varied meanings, in referring to traditional or historic faiths, preferring more precise categories such as polytheism, shamanism, pantheism, or animism. Since the later 20th century, "Pagan" or "Paganism" has become widely used as a self-designation by adherents of Neopaganism. As such, various modern scholars have begun to apply the term to three separate groups of faiths: Historical Polytheism (such as Celtic polytheism, Hellenic Polytheistic Reconstructionism (also called Hellenismos), and Norse paganism), Folk/ethnic/Indigenous religions (such as Chinese folk religion and African traditional religion), and Neo-paganism (such as Wicca and Germanic Neopaganism). First, you are going to find that such beliefs will commonly be more personal beliefs than they will be specifically pagan. Many pagan paths don't claim to know what is unknowable to living humans and dictate what they are to believe and not to believe. This Wiccan doesn't believe in calling spirits supernatural. Death is a very natural part of life. It is a scientific fact that our bodies have energy within them. Some people believe this to be the spirit, or the soul, and that energy has to go somewhere when the physical body dies. I believe that our souls have a choice - when our body dies, if our soul chooses to remain tied to the physical world, that they are able to linger (and to a point interact, this is what people refer to as… [cont.] Answered by Crystal clear - Mon Jun 22 12:22:46 2009 Whats the difference between a Christian and Pagan? Have you ever seen the Philippines's expression of Catholicism? Beautiful, rich & vibrant. AND a blend of Catholicism and local traditions. THIS is how Christianity spread throughout the planet. ALL European expressions/sects have equally been influenced by the Indigenous traditions as it spread. no one religion rose fully formed, totally devoid of any Cultural Influences. This is why there's many common elements between the Xian stories and older cultures in the same areas where the original nomadic (foundations of the Xian faith) people travelled. The fight comes when the many sides (this is not a 2 sided debate) are are aggressively demanding exclusive rights to the USE of the various Indigenous Symbols. Q. Before the rise of Christianity, Pagan gods were worshipped and revered by many people. Even though Christianity became the major religion after Constantine officially made it so, how could it be possible that all the gods of the pagan religions became devils overnight just because Christianity became forcefully implemented as the only true religion? Asked by Kira - Sat Aug 22 09:00:23 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. They didn't. Some of us still worship those old deities and in my faith at least, there is an unbroken line of at least 8,000 years of worship. I honestly don't care what those who worship this younger god think about it either. I consider their assertions of deviltry on my part to be nothing more than a lack of faith, or possibly even an inferiority complex, on their part. Also bear in mind that every time there is a major change about to take place, or one that just has, the new "thing" (leader, deity, whatever) does its best to demonize the older thing. It's really a form of social control. While the older generations will most likely cling tightly to old patterns of behavior and beliefs, the younger generations will embrace the new.… [cont.] Answered by MissDementia - Sat Aug 22 09:10:11 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Pagan"
