Can connecting another computer to my network influence the connections of the other computers?
Q. I had two computers both connected to a wireless router. Yesterday I connected a third computer to the network and, although the connection goes through for this new computer, one of the original computers now says "Limited or no connectivity" and cannot connect to the Internet. Is it possible that the new computer is using up too much bandwidth and is therefore preventing the other computer from accessing the Internet?

A. A printer only accepts data from the P.C of what to print out. I don't think a printer can accept any malicious code from one P.C and send that to another P.C. I know they like to throw the word "infection" around, but the spread of a virus is different from the spread of a common cold. :)

How are computers used by nature researchers and organizations?
Q. Is there any specific applications that help protect the environment? What aspects of computers causes environmental problems? What do environmentalist think of computers?
Asked by roderick_tale - Mon Aug 13 09:04:18 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Scientists use computer for pretty much everything nowadays. Even environmentalists and conservationists. They can make computer models to predict deforestation and even habitat restoration based off of existing data. The part of computers that is an environmental problem is when they are discarded and fill up landfills. They also tend to use a lot of power which then indirectly feeds the need for coal burning power plants to power them. This is however, a rather obscure connection. Environmentalists love computers. I know I do.

How many computers can be connected to the Internet using a wireless router?
Q. I have a Comcast provided wireless router at home. 4 of us can surf the net with no problems. However a 5ht and a 6th computer cannot be used to connect to the Internet. Is there an upper limit on how many computers can talk to the Internet when one uses a wireless router? Or is there something we are doing that is not right?
Asked by nebir - Mon Sep 11 16:34:50 2006 - - 12 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Depends on the router. Most wireless routers have a setting for the number of IP addresses that the DHCP server will allow at one time.

How to stop a computer on my home LAN from accessing internet but allow access to other computers on LAN?
Q. I use Windows filesharing and would like to stop one computer on my LAN from accessing anything but other computers on my local network- I do not want it to be able to access the internet. Can anyone recommend how to do this? I would like this to be something configured in Windows itself since I do not want all partitions on the computer to be unable to access the internet. Just one of them.
Asked by dave - Sat Jun 27 20:35:26 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As previous answers have mentioned, you could configure a firewall rule in your router to block that computer from getting to the Internet. If your router doesn't have that functionality, you could configure that computer with bogus / fictitious DNS addresses. Of course, I would suggest using private IP addresses for this. You could log in the computer as administrator to make those changes, and then the person could have a plain user account, and even if they knew what was going on, they couldn't make changes since it's just a user account. That computer would still be able to see the Windows network, because Windows uses netBIOS for that.

Q. I want to find information about computer recycling. One piece I can not find reliable info on is what percent of computers recycled/donated are able to be refurbished and resold (within the US). The numbers I have found are <2%, 10% and 50%.

A. i'd guess that 50% or more can be salvaged. however, it's extremely difficult to find an operating system that will run very well (ie not be slower than a nematode) on older, slower, machines. i would think that there should be a market for an operating system that has less function, and uses fewer cpu cycles. unfortunately, such a system may well not be profitable. a) because people will simply copy it and not pay, or b) because people will not find the lack of much of the current function acceptable.

A. Well, for a start, you will be connected to your ISP's server, so you don't want to disconnect that one. If you run MSN Messenger or some of messenger program, that will be maybe another couple of connections. I've just looked on my PC, and I have 60 open connections to other computers. I am not connected to any network, just have my broadband access to my home. If you open a DOS window (Start->Run, type 'cmd' in the box for Windows XP, type 'command' in the box for some older versions of windows.) and type the command "netstat", it will show all open connections. You can also type "netstat 5" to make it refresh every 5 seconds (CTRL-C to stop). These connections are normal. If you shutdown all your internet programs, and see more… [cont.]

How do I make my printer work with my wireless computers?
Q. We have 4 computers in our house. Three are currently wireless, one hardwired. We have one printer that is connected with wires to one of the wireless computers. Right now, we can only print using that one computer. So if we are working on one of the other computers, we have to save the file and email it to ourselves and go open it on the "printing" computer. How can I print from the other three computers? Is there a way to link it all now or do I need to go buy some more equipment for the printer? Or do only certain printers have these capabilities?
Asked by ladybug - Fri Jul 20 19:29:06 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You need a network printer server. You plug your printer into this little box and plug it into your wireless router. No longer plug printer into any of your computers. Leave the printer, printer server, and router on all the time. You can turn off the computers. Printer's always available. Some printers already have this ability built-in, and are usually labelled as "network ready", or something like that; they'll have an ethernet jack on the back if they are. Anyway, Linksys makes these little items, inexpensive too. If the following link doesn't work for some reason, the device is the Linksys WPS54G.

Can computer connected through router see workgroup on computers connected to modem?
Q. Here's the situation: I have a modem which have 4 connections. 1 of them is connected to a wireless router and 3 others to computers. When I connect to the router, I can see the workgroup computers of others who use wireless. However, I can't see the workgroup computers of those connected to the modem. Any way to solve this?
Asked by wwwdrecom - Thu Apr 23 01:00:55 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. you might want to try switching your connections around, try connecting the computers to the router and connect the modem to the port on the router specifically for modems (IE: a linksys router has a modem connection to the left of the other ones, separate). Also, if this isn't your problem, make sure all the computers are in the same workgroup.

A. This may or may not work, but it's worth a try: This requires hooking up both computers with a ethernet cable. After you connect them, go to your Network Connections and right click on your Local Area Connection and select Properties. Click the Advanced tab and you should now see a little tick box that says "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection."

A. Right click on the printer and and select share. You will need to put both pc's in the same workgroup and set your firewalls to allow print and file sharing.

A. Wireless hub with IP addresses for each satellite computer. Enabling each wireless linked computer to print via the common wireless hub. The printer is linked to a hardwired hub, which is linked to the wireless hub. Check D-LINK brand, ... I have an apple airport hub that works great for my laptops and tower. Each remote computer will have to have an airport card on board. Most newish computers come with one, you can also add one if needed.

Q. The host computer and one of the computers "see" each other just fine via ethernet cables. I can exchange data through the "shared docs" folders from both. I just connected a third computer via an ethernet cable, and it's connecting to the internet just fine from the host, but I can't "see" the shared docs folders on the other two computers from the third computer, or see the third computer from the others. A. The faster/easier way to get from one computer to another is to just go to start>run, type \computername, hit ok, and it will show all the shared files/printers avaliable on that computer. If you would really like to go the long browsing way just make sure each computer is in the same workgroup here: rightclick on my computer and go to properties go to computer name click change enter your workgroup name/make sure it is correct hit ok on everything (including restart) All of the computers should now appear in the same workgroup in my network places.

Q. I am about to join 1600 computers to my Active Directory domain. Their current names contain underscores, which violates the corporate naming policy. I have to change their names before I join them. These are remote machines, so I will probably use some sort of script. Before anyone suggests netdom, it only works on domain members.

A. You can actually download the game from Blizzard or from any other common mirror out there. You just need an account key to play your own, specified account. Once you have an account and its paid for, you can play it anywhere that has World of Warcraft installed.

A. If the two computers are near each other, and they both have a network card, you can connect them together using a "crossover" cable. This is a special network cable where the recieve and transmit wires are "crossed" to the opposite position on each end. You could then set up the network between the two. If they aren't near each other and you really do want to create a dial-up using the Internet Sharing within XP.

Nanotechnology is changing everything in the computer world. Computers are being programmed to learn just like children do. It has been estimated that by 2050, a $1000.00 home computer will rival the human brain in power, memory, and self perception. Look up quantum computers. Computers design based upon completely new concepts. A small quantum computer would be many, many times faster and smarter than standard computers and even the human brain.
