what is the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom?
Q. I am looking for a camera to take ordinary pictures of people, pets, outdoors etc. to put on the computer, internet. Do I print these off the computer to get my own snapshots or take them to a store? I want to share pics with grandchildren that live in another state. I have never owned or used a digital camera. My computer has only usb ports, windows xp, 2006. Thanks for your help.

A. First, I recommend cameras with an optical viewfinder. The LCD viewfinder is almost useless in daylight. If you plan to take pictures outside in the daylight, you will need the optical viewfinder. Canon is the only company that has some compact models with the optical viewfinder. The Canon SD780 IS is an excellent example. Second, you can print them with your computer printer, take them to a store, or send them in over the internet and get prints back. Third, digital pictures is a great way to share with distant relatives. Fourth, the USB ports are perfect for downloading your pictures, just follow the instructions in the manual. Fifth, enjoy.

Recommend a camera for pet photography?
Q. I want a digital camera, good for taking sharp, HD pictures of pets, wildlife and sports, but good for other photos, like portraits, as well. I'd prefer for it to be under $500, can be used. I'd like a specific camera, but just specs for what I need would be great too. I'd like it to have really good focus, and a very fast shutter speed. I'm new to photography so I don't know what I'd need. Thanks!

A. The Canon Powershot range is pretty good .. The Canon Powershot SX30IS at US$430 (RRP) could be considered as it has all the specs you need. It has a tilt-able LCD screen which is great to use if you are shooting low angle shots or movies which is something you probably need to do when shooting small animals. Here's the specs: A slightly more-than-you-required-specs camera will be the Canon G12. This is their top end camera, still with US$500. It has all the bells and whistles. Check out if you really need the extra features. If not the SX30IS will meet your need at a lower cost. Added: If you are looking at a budget of AUD$500 than the above may be above that depending on the market price. You may have to settle for those with non-tiltable [cont.]

Pet pix where cat's nose is prominant, do I use 35mm or digital camera or Adobe Photoshop?
Q. I've seen greeting cards around here in Jersey where there is a photo of a dog or cat and it looks like the nose is almost touching the camera. Does anyone know whether that's done with a 35mm SLR or digital? Can it be done in PS7? You can see what I'm trying to achieve here: That was a PS7 manipulation of this: I don't mind using an SLR camera shot and scanning it in. I love the ease of the digital but it is limited. Anyone that can offer some advice or direction will be my new best friend. Jersey

A. It's not the type of camera, it's the focal length of the lens. The shorter the focal length the more distortion you get. If the distance from the tip of the cat's nose to its eye,is one inch, and you can fill the picture with the cat's head by shooting from 9 inches away from the nose, then the nose comes 10% of the way from the cat's eyes to the camera. If you fill the picture with the cat's by shooting from 1 inch away from the nose, then then nose comes 50% of the distance from the eyes to the camera so it appears much bigger. If you shoot a human with an SLR, use a 50mm lens, and fill the frame with their head, their nose will look too big. That's why portrait lenses are 80-100 mm. With a cat, since their head is rounder, the… [cont.]

A. I don't really know what you mean, but I think I might. Like, you're playing with it and pressing buttons and the screen is lit up and bright, and then he goes to sleep and you stop pressing buttons, and the light goes off? That's because it's idle and to save battery life the lights go off. There's nothing wrong with it. Cell phones and everything do it too.
