What's the difference between expansion and imperialism?
Q. For an essay on US history, I was asked to explain the ideology supporting expansion and the motivations for imperialism in the late nineteenth century. But I'm a bit confused as to how to interpret this, especially in terms of expansion and imperialism. The phrase "ideology supporting" also has me lost. Does this mean the same thing as motivation, or does it mean the more in-depth reasons for the motivations? I'm starting to think too much into this, so if anyone could get me back on track, I'd be thankful!

A. I think it's as simple as the intentions of expansionists vs. imperialists. Expansionists in US History were often concerned with the US moving into territory that was largely unoccupied, and usually in North America. Disregarding the Native Americans, they weren't really looking to take over areas already heavily populated or colonized. Manifest Destiny is a perfect example of what most expansionts wanted. They believed that the US should move into the Western half of North America, because it was "destiny" and georaphically logical for the US to span from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Imperialists, on the other hand, wanted to seize territory from already established countries or colonies. Take Hawaii for example, or Florida. In… [cont.]

Can I buy a Sims 2 expansion pack without having to buy the original Sims 2 game?
Q. I was going to buy Sims 2 Nightlife (The expansion pack), but my friend told me that you have to buy the original game and install it, then buy the expansion pack and install that and play with that disk in it. I wasn't planning to buy the regular game. Is what my friend said true?

A. Yes. The base game is required before you can purchase anything else. Expansion packs, as the name suggests, are created to expand on the game, but not provide the game itself. The Sims 2 core game can be bought by itself as a regular game, or as included in one of the following games: -The Sims 2 Special DVD edition: as stated, this comes with a special DVD -The Sims 2 Holiday Edition (2005 Edition): Also known as the Christmas Party Pack, this comes with holiday themed items -The Sims 2 Holiday Edition (2006 Edition): Comes with Happy Holiday Stuff. Overall, it's better than the 2005 edition in that it allows your Sims to throw get-togethers and wear different fashions -The Sims 2 Deluxe: Comes with the Nightlife expansion All of the… [cont.]

how many sims 2 expansion packs does it take to start slowing gameplay?
Q. So far i have The Sims 2, and Seasons. My game seems pretty quick, with very little lagging. I want more expansion packs but i don't want it to run slow, which i know happens. Does anyone know how many expansion packs you can have before it starts running slow?
Asked by B - Thu Jul 10 16:11:54 2008 - Video & Online Games - 13 Answers - 2 Comments

A. That depends on your computer and how much cc you have. If you don't know how to find your systems specs, this will tell you how: Once you know your specs, here are the minimum requirements: Note: there are also recommended requirements. You can always list your system specs here and we can tell you if what you have is sufficient for more EPs. Since you're running Seasons, you shouldn't have any problem adding at least 1 or 2 more EPs. From my understanding, Seasons and Pets are the biggest resource hogs and are the most likely EPs to cause game slowdown and lag.

Asked by Tristan Smalley - Thu Jun 2 15:04:09 2011 - History - 1 Answers - Comments

A. The 7 Years War 1756-63 pitting Britain and Prussia against France Austria and Russia had two causes involving territorial issues or expansion. 1. Austria had lost the province of Silesia (SW Poland) to Prussia in 1748 and wanted it back. 2. The British and French started fighting in North America as their North American territories were expanding (they both wanted the 'Ohio country' (the current States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee).

What were the positive and negative effects of expansion before the Civil War?
Q. From the settlement of British colonies in North America until the Civil War, westward expansion had profound effects on the foreign policy, economic development, and domestic politics of the colonies and the United States. What were the positive effects of expansion? What were the negative effects? Ultimately, did expansion cause the Civil War?
Asked by mollyconnelly - Mon Dec 13 15:43:29 2010 - History - 1 Answers - Comments

A. One positive effect of the Louisiana Purchase was not only the acquisition from Napoleon of a large amount of land that for all intents and purposes doubled the size of the United States, but also kept a major war involving Spain, Britain and France on our soil from becoming a major problem. Interestingly enough, one negative effect of this expansion was the Civil War, so yes, expansion indirectly led to the Civil War. Look up the Missouri-Kansas border wars where pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces had a series of bloody encounters over the issue of slavery spreading westward with the expansion. Bleeding Kansas is a good search term to use.

Why does the expansion of the universe occur and why the expansion is not homogeneous?
Q. There is some evidence that the universe expands continuously. The distance between any two constellations increases day after day. If one constellation orbits another, a centrifugal force will be generated and may counter the gravity to make the two constellations move away from each other. Is it possible that centrifugal forces lead to the unstoppable expansion of the universe?--- The expansion of the universe is not homogeneous across the whole space. For example the average distance between the earth and the sun over a year remain the same from century to century, whereas the distance between any two constellations increases year after year. This means that our solar system does not expand albeit the whole universe expands at the… [cont.]

A. It is space itself that is expanding. I assume by constellations you mean galaxies (or in current parlance universes--spac e itself is called the cosmos). In smaller systems the so called force of gravity overcomes expansion (so, the Earth is not expanding, and neither are you). Whatever is causing expansion does so over large distances, and due to gravitational forces can be and is overcome (the great galaxy in the constellation Andromeda is approaching our galaxy, for example because it is so close that their mutual gravity intervenes). But over cosmic distances the expansion is everywhere, and the velocities are everywhere directly correlated to distance (thus the Hubble Constant of Recession).

A. So you can upgrade when better hardware is available. You might not have the money to spend on a top of the line machine. So it's nice to have the expansion available if you want to add a better video, ethernet, or sound card. Or, you may buy the best top of the line model. If you have no room to make it better in the future, your machine will be out dated much sooner.

A. Interest rates go down in a monetary expansion because there is an increase in the money supple. Interest rates go up in a fiscal expansion because there is an increase in the demand for funds (Not the supply) and the government has to compete with other borrowers.

Asked by Skeptic - Mon Mar 30 20:35:08 2009 - Astronomy & Space - 12 Answers - Comments

A. I was just watching a show on it yesterday lol. Scientists and theorists call the evident outcome of this expansion the "big rip", in which the expansion overcomes the gravitational output of superclusters like our own milky way, because once there is no gravity holding everything together, it "rips". the "force" you were talking about is called "dark energy" or "phantom energy", and is referring to this acceleration of expansion. The only way the guy said he could explain it is if you quickly stretch a rubber band, and the hand that does not move is the center of the universe (not moving), but a you get closer to the hand that is stretching, the rubber band is moving faster. How to install expansion joints when pouring a concrete driveway?
Q. I am going to be installing a concrete driveway. I have tore out the excisting asphalt driveway and formed up for the concrete. How do I install the expansion joints? Do you pour the concrete in one pour and then use a saw and cut the concrete where the joints need to go in? How often do they need to be placed for a 17' by 78' driveway?
Asked by tgdesigns98 - Tue Aug 8 11:02:33 2006 - Do It Yourself (DIY) - 6 Answers - Comments

A. The expansion joints are formed either by you putting thin wooden slats in that leave slots, or, while you are smoothing the surface, you actually shape the slots with your trowel. Usually the individual section can be about 4' x 6', and larger if you use heavy duty steel grids to strengthen the concrete. With your measurements I would do one down the center, and the others at 6' to 8' intervals. Since this also depends on the quality of the concrete you'll use, you may want to double check that with your concrete supplier. Depending on the size of the vehicles you'll be running across that, I would think that you want at least a 6" thickness, and more if the underground isn't very hard and stable. Use one to two inch gravel as a base. [cont.]

A. I haven't fully played all mine yet, but so far the one I appreciate most is Freetime because sims can have hobbies like playing violin or doing ballet and then visit secret lots when they get good at their hobby...and Open For Business because the sims get to make their own businesses. After awhile, though, OFB can become redundant because you're constantly controlling or monitoring the business operations at times. Nightlife has the most fun lots with bowling, dance clubs, restaurants, an art museum, kareoke, etc. I think the Nightlife expansion was the first time Sims could go out on dates. I'm about to get into Bon Voyage and Apartment Life now. Bon Voyage looks like an adventure and Apartment Life should be engaging because neighbors… [cont.]

A. There are four basic reasons why Islam has little true claim to scientific achievement: First, the Muslim world benefited greatly from the Greek sciences, which were translated for them by Christians and Jews. To their credit, Muslims did a better job of preserving Greek text than did the Europeans of the time and this became the foundation for their own knowledge. (One large reason for this, however, was that access by Christians to this part of their world was cut off by Muslim slave ships and coastal raids that dominated the Mediterranean during this period). Although there is no arguing that the Muslim world was relatively more advanced during this period than the a Christiana world, the reasons for this have absolutely nothing to do… [cont.]

A. Here are the types of expansion slots your PC may have: 1. PCI Express (PCIe) - communicates with the motherboard, and therefore with the microprocessor, both quickly and efficiently. 2. PCI - The PCI slot is the most common form of internal expansion for a PC. 3. AGP - stands for Accelerated Graphics Port. it is designed to deal with graphics adapters. Older PCs may sport this expansion slot, but the best video cards use PCI Express. 4. ISA - stands for Industry Standard Architecture because it never really had a name until another, better type of expansion slot came along. ISA slots hang around to be compatible with older expansion cards.

A. Go to the market place and purchase the pack. It is saved into the cache folder in your memory for that game. you do not have to have the game in or have the game up when you go to the market place it will take you out of the game more than likely unless you are playing GHWT or Rock Band. Not much more to it, the next time you play the game the additional maps or what ever the expansion is should be available to you. Good Luck
