Jennifer Ashton Information

Jennifer Lee Ashton (born April 23, 1969, on George Air Force Base in California) is a physician, author and television medical contributor.

Life

Ashton was born in California to Dr. Oscar Garfein (a New York City cardiologist) and Dorothy Garfein (a registered nurse). She is married to physician and surgeon, Dr. Robert C. Ashton, Jr., and has two children, Alex and Chloe.

She was educated at the Horace Mann School in Riverdale, New York, where she graduated with honors in French and English. She received her BA undergraduate degree from Columbia College, Columbia University in 1991 where she was selected for the Dean's List, and her MD from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 2000, where she served as President of her class for four consecutive years. She was the recipient of the Herbert J. Bartlestone Award in Pharmacology upon graduating from medical school.

Ashton is a board-certified Ob-Gyn and attending physician at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, an affiliate of Mount Sinai Medical Center, in Englewood, New Jersey. She is the Founder of Hygeia Gynecology, LLC, her private medical practice in New Jersey.

Ashton has authored a book for adolescent girls, titled "The Body Scoop for Girls". "The Body Scoop for Girls" was published by Avery, the health division of Penguin Publishing. She has also written articles for various magazines, and is the author of a health blog for The Bergen Record, a northern New Jersey newspaper.

She was signed as a medical contributor for the national Fox News Channel in March 2006, along with her husband. She has been featured on TLC's A Baby Story, on PBS and on Oprah&Friends XM radio's The Dr. Oz Show.

Dr. Ashton was hired as a CBS News Medical Correspondent on April 1, 2009. She contributes to all CBS media platforms including regular appearances on The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, The Early Show, and is a featured expert commentator on WCBS Radio and its national affiliates.

Ashton is a member of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She serves on the Board of Trustees of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation for Humanism in Medicine and of The Community Chest. Ashton has been honored by the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey as the recipient of its Women of Achievement award and by the October Woman Foundation for Breast Cancer research as the recipient of their Hope For Tomorrow award.
