A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Modems can be used over any means of transmitting analog signals, from driven diodes to radio. The most familiar example is a voice band modem that turns the digital data of a personal computer into modulated electrical signals in the voice frequency range of a telephone channel. These signals can be transmitted over telephone lines and demodulated by another modem at the receiver side to recover the digital data. Modems are generally classified by the amount of data they can send in a given time unit, normally measured in bits per second (bit/s, or bps). They can also be classified by the symbol rate measured in baud, the number of times the modem changes its signal state per second. For example, the ITU V.21 standard used audio frequency-shift keying, aka tones, to carry 300 bit/s using 300 baud, whereas the original ITU V.22 standard allowed 1,200 bit/s with 600 baud using phase shift keying. It was working 5 months ago when I changed my isp. Asked by Pam F - Mon Jun 29 16:29:25 2009 - Computer Networking - 1 Answers - Comments A. If you have two separate Internet connections, then that's what you *must* do, so it's not a question of whether you can or can't. You must. There is no other way. For example, if you have a cable connection and a cable modem and you decide to get an ADSL connection, you would need an ADSL modem as well. Answered by cen - Mon Jun 29 16:37:47 2009 Is it possible to have two DSL modems in one house?
Q. I have two of the same modems, can I have both of them in different rooms sharing one line? Thanks Asked by sean S - Mon Mar 29 23:58:17 2010 - Computer Networking - 5 Answers - Comments A. It is VERY unlikely. Each modem will have a different MAC address hence a different IP address. There will be a separate line, be it cable or dare I say phone line. Yep called my ISP to confirm and it was confirmed. Answered by Goerge - Tue Mar 30 00:12:22 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "modems" |
