How do these sibling names work together?
Q. What do you think of these names together (siblings)? The last name is van der Heyden. The first names are set in stone but the middle names could be changed. Any suggestions/feedback? I would like the names to sound wealthy/upper class. Thanks! James Hamilton Alexander Channing Victoria Charlotte Laura Christine Lucia Nohelia (Loo-shuh Noell-ya) Graham Winslow Catherine Juliet Ella Rebecca Violet India
Asked by - Mon Dec 12 22:46:52 2011 - Baby Names - 5 Answers - Comments

A. James Hamilton - fine Alexander Channing - um no - Alexander Thomas - Channing is an occupational name, and no wealthy person would use such a name for his/her child. Victoria Charlotte - fine Laura Christine - not really - Loren Christina will work, though. Lucia Nohelia - no - that's Portuguese - Louisa Noelle Graham Winslow - no - Nicholas Graham Catherine Juliet - no - Catherine Julianna Ella Rebecca - no - Camille Rebecca Violet India - no - Veronica Suzanne A wealthy family will go out of its way to keep from using ethnic names. One can never tell what kind of family your child will marry into. Happy holidays...

Why is the names for earth and our moon so boring compared to the other planets?
Q. We have constellations named after myths and the other planets are named after mythological gods. How come our planet is simply called "earth"? The other planet's moons also have cool names like "Titan" and such but our is just called "the moon." Does anyone else see the unfairness of this?
Asked by - Thu Mar 25 13:52:33 2010 - Astronomy & Space - 2 Answers - Comments

A. They may only seem boring. You must think/remember when these bodies were named. The Earth, the Moon and, our star the Sun have been visible to the naked eye for as long as we have been in existence. The other bodies in our solar were discovered during and after a period of great cultural influence from the Greek/Roman era. Greek and Roman influence basically is the mother/father of western civilization and western astronomers and scientists were the ones to discover most everything passed the Moon, Earth, and Sun. Prior to this, we thought there was ONLY the one Sun, one planet (earth) and one other heavenly planetlike body (the moon). Why not use the same name for soil/mud/dirt for the entire planet. This is all educated guessing, but I… [cont.]

How do last names work when your adopted?
Q. My boyfriend has two last names, he only uses one. But legally he has two I will use Smith and Jones, though those are not his real last names. And Jeff for his first. So it would be Jeff Smith/Jones. So my question is when we get married will my name be Jenna Smith/Jones? Or can I just take the name he uses the most witch is Smith?

A. Legally, when u get married, technically, on all your paper work and stuff, u still have ur maiden name. So, the name u marry into is sorta unofficial.

A. *Takes a deep breath* I was almost finished with an AMAZING list for you, and I accidentally closed it! Ugh...I'm so mad. :/ Now, let's try this again... First of all, I think Kathleen sounds the best with Amy: Amy Kathleen. Julia Kathleen would be nice as well. I don't think it sounds right at all with Alice though. Leah Kathleen wouldn't be bad, but I think Amy Kathleen and Julia Kathleen sound better. I'm not sure which I like best with Diane. Julia Diane is pretty. And Leah Dianne would be nice. None of them sound bad with Diane actually. Why are certain names specific to the male gender and certain names to the female gender and some unisexual?
Q. We find certain names that universally only male names (Joshua, Moses, George) and certain names which are universally female names (Jessica, Debra, Hillary), and certain names which can be used for both males and females (Drew, Henry/Henri, Billy/Billie). When and why did these distinctions between names develop and how did the unisexual names develop.

A. You know how native-American names always consist of words (when translated), such as "Biting Snake"? Basically, that's how *all* names work. My own, for instance, I believe was Hebrew for "One that rules". Because of older religious beliefs, or simply customs, certain names just didn't describe women. As time passed, rather than associate names by their meanings, we just assumed the names that women were using were "feminine", and that names men used were "masculine", and just stuck with it. Now, as far as unisex names go, I'm not 100% sure. I imagine, though, that these names were adopted after women started playing a more important role politically. Such as Alex; Alexander for a male, Alexandria… [cont.]

A. I had the same dilema when I got my two girls. I knew I wanted one to be Star because she has a cute blaze on her forehead. Then I wanted to stick with the celestial theme, but nothing sounded right. . . moon, comet, constellation. So I was discussing it with my mom, and she said, "Hey, what the spanish word for moon?" LUNA! So now I have Star and Luna, perfect names for them. That story might not help you, but here is a site with some lists of pair names. Hope this helps!

A name is a word or term used for identification. Names can identify a class or category of things, or a single thing, either uniquely, or within a given context. A personal name identifies a specific unique and identifiable individual person, and may or may not include a middle name. The name of a specific entity is sometimes called a proper name (although that term has a philosophical meaning also) and is a proper noun. Other nouns are sometimes, more loosely, called names; an older term for them, now obsolete, is "general names".
