SynonymsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A sport is an organized, competitive, and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. It is governed by a set of rules or customs. In a sport the key factors are the physical capabilities and skills of the competitor when determining the outcome (winning or losing). The physical activity involves the movement of people, animals and/or a variety of objects such as balls and machines or equipment. In contrast, games such as card games and board games, though these could be called mind sports and some are recognized as Olympic sports, require primarily mental skills and only mental physical involvement. Non-competitive activities, for example as jogging or playing catch, are usually classified as forms of recreation. Physical events such as scoring goals or crossing a line first often define the result of a sport. However, the degree of skill and performance in some sports such as diving, dressage and figure skating is judged according to well-defined criteria. This is in contrast with other judged activities such as beauty pageants and body building, where skill does not have to be shown and the criteria are not as well defined. Records are kept and updated for most sports at the highest levels, while failures and accomplishments are widely announced in sport news. Sports are most often played just for fun or for the simple fact that people need exercise to stay in good physical condition. However, professional sport is a major source of entertainment. While practices may vary, sports participants are expected to display good sportsmanship, and observe standards of conduct such as being respectful of opponents and officials, and congratulating the winner when losing. GNU Free Documentation License How can I start a new sport in my sophomore year? Q. I'm going to be a sophomore this year. I've never really played sports before and am not very good at most of them. The only sport I've done was track in middle school. I was one of the slowest on the team, but I did improve and enjoyed it. So, is it too late for me to start this a sport year? I'm interested in tennis and field hockey. Will there be other inexperienced people on the team? How do I go about starting one of these sports? And which one do you think I should do? Asked by Spring! - Sun Aug 9 09:27:44 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I play field hockey, and don't know much about tennis. Tennis might be a great sport to pick up, but I highly suggest field hockey. Field Hockey is the kind of sport that you can improve quickly on just by allowing your self to be coachable and putting in a little effort. To tryout you need to abilities, running and field sense. Sure it would be helpful to have stick skills and know all the rules. But At tryouts its so much more helpful to have endurance and can play the game well. It might be to late... but it might not be to. I think you should try it... ask around and find a stick no ones using, pass around with someone see if you like it. If you do then practice and run. Even if you don't want to put in all this effort then don't. Just… [cont.] Answered by #5fh<3 - Sun Aug 9 17:43:23 2009 What Olympic sport could I start in time for London 2012? Q. I've been transfixed with the Olympics. I'm 30 and have never done a sport. Is there ANY kind of sport I could start now to be in time for qualifying for London 2012.I want to experience the same sense of pride those atheletes feel when representing their countries. I only have four years. No silly answers please. Asked by curiousJ - Sun Aug 24 09:37:07 2008 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments A. I agree with others here that you have probably not enough time to develop the skilss of a sport where strategy and instinctive action or reaction are required. You best bet is to figure out ONE fitness based and/or skill sport based on your physique (remember at 30, your physique is pretty well established so, for example, you may not want to look at running as your sport if your physique is good for weightlifting). Don't forget to consider sports you may not have much experience in. For example, you may have a very good physique for archery even though you have not really done it competitively! N.B. You HAVE to have a passion for your sport. You will be doing it all day every day and it will cause you more pain and heartache than you… [cont.] Answered by champagnecharlie41 - Sun Aug 24 09:52:44 2008 How many sports and sport federations are there in Europe and North America?
