What is the best toys to get my baby for his first Christmas?
Q. I want to get him a toy box for future toys and he won't mind getting that instead of a toy. I just don't know whats the best for toys. I get confused everytime we go to the toy department. The problem we have is that he'll be 1 year old only a month later so its hard to get him 12 month toys for his first christmas and then older toys only a month later. At this point he usually likes the packaging more than whats in it.

A. For my son's first Christmas, we gave him diapers. =) Don't worry so much about the ages listed on boxes. My son plays with just about anything that we help him find interesting. Even if the toy says "18 months" there will be plenty that he will find interesting. Really you only need to watch out for small parts he can swallow or moving parts that can pinch. Other than that, find something that you think fits his personality- animals, trucks, etc- and let him figure it out in his own time. Also, books are always good. Even if they seem old, they always grow into them. Kids love pictures, plus you can feel like you're helping them learn. OH- and if they make noise, make sure they have an OFF button. Rule number 1!!! Right now,… [cont.]

Good safe toys to leave in the crate to entertain the dogs while we are not home?
Q. Keep in mind they are toy murders and the kongs barely hold up with them...the dogs are a toy poodle and a 20 pound terrier mix...so I'm looking for good entertaining toys they can enjoy for the hour or two they are alone and then also just safe toys in general that they might not destroy... (they only seem to be able to handle tennis balls) We can't have anything plush or squeaky (they destroy those) No ropes or anything stringy (they eat those) Thanks We haven't tried the black kongs...our poodle you put the kong in the cage with the treats (we can't do peanut butter its forbidden in this house...I'm highly allergic to it) and he won't touch it until we let him out...and our terrier mix just likes to destroy...but the only things she… [cont.]

A. Sounds like you have a couple of avid little chewers on your hands! Have you tried the black kongs? They are super sturdy, especially for small dogs. Also, I would go with nylabones (there are all kinds and shapes) and raw beef bones. Make sure they are raw. Cooked bones splinter, raw ones don't.

What toys can I make for my cat to play with using house hold items?
Q. My cat is nearly 3 years old ( in November) and she gets lonely and bored alot of times when I'm busy and can't play or pet her. She doesn't like marbles or balls, she grew out of them, and I want to make her her own toy she could play with on her own and have fun. I can't buy any toys because my parents won't take me but I really want to make her something special so she won't be bored and lonely. But she's afraid of almost everything so it can't be that big.

A. Cats tend to be so fickle, that it's usually best to NOT put that much effort into it! Try out a few things to see what grabs her attention: - Dangle a shoelace or string - Attach a bell (or something with a little noise) to a stick - Try a bow used for gift wrapping - Toss her the cap of bottled water/milk - My cats love to carry around hair binders - Make a ball out of gift wrapping paper (so it crinkles) - Blow bubbles near her - Any flash light or small laser light can provide hours of entertainment Good job looking after your cat's needs :)

What are some good toys for cats that they can play with without me having to manipulate them?
Q. My bf and I have two cats (one is not quite an adult). We're both full time college students and have lots of other activities going on so we're not home much. I buy my cats tons of toys but a lot of them they won't or can't play with unless I am manipulating them. Aside from that toy where the ball rolls around in a circle (I have that), what are some toys the cats could play with and not need humans to help with? I try to play with them as much as I can, but a lot of times I just cuddle and pet them rather than play.

A. cats love to play with anything...and will by themselves...try some tennis balls...crumpled up foil...straws...all my cats love these...they will bat them around and carry the straws around in their mouths. i am glad that you care about your cats...cuddle and petting let them know they are loved...but playing with them is important, too. try to find some time for them every day...a few minutes is all you need...

Where can i find good puzzle toys for my dog?
Q. Well, I have a smart little doggie, and she's very easily bored with the toys she has right now. She's a shepard collie cross, and, to my dismay, she's already mastered how to get treats out of Kong toys. Right now, I'm keeping her occupied with an oddly shaped treat inside of a plastic water bottle ><. So, if anyone knows some other toys I could get for her, that would be awesome. Even better, would be links to where I can purchase these items online. Thanks a bunch everyone!

A. My dogs LOVE plastic water bottles and so do I! I first used them when I was in a state that recycled them and I taught the dogs to take any of my empty bottles to the recycle bins and then they come back and I gave them a treat... that soon backfired as when they ran out of the empties from me, they figured out how to get the ones out of the recycle bin, plant them in various areas and 'retrieve' them for a treat again... duh... boy was I used!! They have the various little balls that you can put kibble or treats in where you can give them interesting things to do -- check on the pet catalog sites... there is also a site from Kong that shows various treat suggestions including freezing stuff in them and putting different things in there… [cont.]

What is the best way to clean or disinfect toddler toys in order to prevent the spread of illness?
Q. A lot of times we don't know a child is sick until days later when symptoms are more evident to the parent. With all the 'bugs' going around this winter, I am trying to figure out the best way to disinfect and clean my sons toys after finding out about such situations... Part of the problem is that some toys are more easily cleaned than others. (due to the materials) I also try to use organic type cleaners when possible. Afterall, these toys end up in kids mouthes and I don't want to put anything on the toy that I wouldn't put in their mouths. Yes, I know... they eat dirt and pick things up off the floor to eat, but that is not a parents' intention; it just happens... I also know kids need to get sick to build immunity, but some… [cont.]

What kinds of toys are good for guinea pigs?
Q. I want to get my lil piggie something fun to play with, but I heard alot of the toys that are out there on the market can hurt their back. Any suggestions?
Asked by sweetheartkat22 - Wed May 27 14:57:04 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best and most safe toys for guinea pigs are actually things you can find right in your house. They love things like toilet and paper towel rolls (of course make sure it's just the cardboard roll without any paper on it), they also enjoy brown paper bags, just open each end and they will chew on it and run through it like a tunnel. you can also fill it with hay. Some guinea pigs also like small bird toys that you can find at the pet store, just make sure it isn't too big and doesn't have too many strings and things on it that could be a choking hazard. But you're right most toys out there are harmful to piggies and the exercise balls should never be used because a guinea pigs body is not as flexible as a hamster or gerbil.

What kind of toys should I expose my 8wk old to?
Q. I am afraid that I am not playing enough with my son. He is 8 wks old. I am not sure what kind of toys or stimulation I should use with him. He doesn't really hold a rattle and stuffed animals can cause SIDS. He loves to swing in his swing and look at the mobile that is above it. I read to him every night. I have bought toys for his crib--lights and sounds aquarium that attaches to the inside of the crib and some educational toys. What should I do to keep him stimulated and to aid in developing his brain?

A. Buy him black and whit books.. set them up in front of him while he is laying on his belly.. You can hold and dance with him while singing to him... Just talking to him and giving him eye contact would be great for him too right now.. make sure he is getting tummy time too... Also try and cut back on the swing and all the toys in the bed.. the mobile is fine, but you want him to know his bed is a place of rest and not be overwhelmed while sleeping.. stuffed animals are okay if you are using them to play with him with.. not for his bed.. like panda bears.. because they are black and white babies love those.. also try starting to find stuff he can hold.. thats light weight and is ribbed so he can chew on them and feel the… [cont.]

A. When my son was 2, he LOVED the Thomas the train sets. I ended up buying him an imagniarium train table (its just like the thomas the train table, just not the thomas the train brand, so its a bit cheaper). It came with TONS of wood train tracks and the wood trains. He absolutely LOVED it. My son is now 5, and he still plays with it, and my daughter who is 15 months also has started playing with. I think its a great investment. They are so sturdy, and last through the years! I spent $120 for mine, and it was well worth it. You can always add on to it too with neat train stations and what not.

I have tons of toys and clothes that I would like to donate to orphanages in Africa. How do I do this?
Q. I have contacted numerous charities, but none are willing to accept items, only cash. I've even tried to find a direct address to an orphanage. I'm willing to pay to ship these things. I just can't imagine so many children without toys or books while we have so much not even being used. Any ideas or leads would be great!
Asked by tltoumbs24 - Tue Mar 11 02:18:19 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are a number of reasons charities won't accept these donations for delivery overseas: -- the amount of shipping these items overseas, paying customs, moving the items overland to needy children, etc., is MASSIVE. It's much more affordable to buy such items *locally* -- donating clothes takes money and jobs away from local people who are making and selling clothes. -- charities want to put their resources into what children in Africa really, really need: education, training and health care. Your donation isn't among the critical priorities for serving children in Africa. Look around *locally* for a charity that will accept toys and clothes.

What are good toys to keep dogs occupied?

Q. What do you think about the recent recalled toys? Several weeks ago, a toy called Aqua Dots was recalled due to chemicals that are the same to date-rape drugs. Several kids were affected by this -- they went into a coma for 5-6 hours. What would be your solution to prevent this?

A. The responsibility of the problem has 2 parts: One: It is the manufacturers responsibility to enforce stricter standards of product quality when having products made overseas in the best interest of thier consumers. Two: Parents should pay closer attention to what their children are doing with their toys, allow their children to have age appropriate toys only and use common sense. Many of the recent recalls could have been prevented with #2. I mean... Aquadots, recommended for ages 5+ yet one of the main cases in Australia was of a 10 year old getting sick.. if the parents had been paying attention then maybe a 10 year old would have known better than to eat her toys. A. Straws, paper fans, raffia, cardboard (without adhesive), popsicle sticks, paper bags filled with treats/discarded toy parts, human baby toys from goodwill, these are all inexpensive and safe toys for birds. When buying human baby toys, check them over for parts the bird could injure itself on, and remove those, or avoid that toy all together. When buying second hand, wash and disinfect before offering to your bird. No jingle bells, the slats can entrap toes, and cause significant, and sometimes permanent, damage.

A. You may want to enroll her in some type of agility class - she will burn lots of energy (physical and mental). Also, you need to rotate her toys - don't give her all 10 all the time, just 2 or 3 max and then put those away and give her 2 different ones the next day, etc. Buster cube is a good one to try.
